The Secret of The Magic Gourd

Just watched Walt Disney Co.’s first non-Hollywood movie a day ago – The Secret of The Magic Gourd. This movie is in Mandarin with English and Chinese subtitles. It has been released in September and surprisingly it wasn’t as popular as other Disney movie in American Version like Toy Story, Dinosaur etc.

According to the Wikipedia, this movie is a story based on Chinese Novel written by the late children’s literature author ‘Zhang Tianyi’.

Synopsis: This is a story about a young schoolboy named Wang Bao who likes to dream of achieving great things but often lazy and no initiative to get things done. Because of his character, his schoolmates often laugh at him. Wang’s life changed when he discovered the Magic Gourd which fulfills all his dreams of doing nothing and getting everything. This has made him excelled in academic and sports thus admired by his schoolmates and teachers. But later Wang encountered hilarious situation as there are many occasions in which the gourd tries to grant his wishes but ends up screwing him up. However, at the end Wang managed to prove himself in the competition with his own hard work and capability.

My thoughts on this movie: Obviously this is an educational movie four younger children, even an adult like me do feel enjoy watching. Ultimately a good moral of story which tells you ‘To work hard for what you want, there’s no such thing as an unearned reward’. Actress Gigi Leung’s role as a Mathematics Teacher, however just a few scenes, not much credit in this movie but consider an important role. Some of the scenes really makes me laugh out loud….particularly when the Magic Gourd turn things up side down, do watch this out yourself! There are also images of fishes, toys, dinosaur appeared in the scenes quite decently but of course not as excitingly played out in ‘Memo’. Still, it’s not a bad way for the children to spend 80 minutes on this movie which is educational and entertaining.
